Profile for Derrice Deane
Principal Anchor

Derrice Deane is a Barbadian national who brings to CaribNation a varied background, having been raised mainly in Guyana, with a short childhood stint in Trinidad and Tobago. She possesses a passionate interest in the Caribbean, its people and affairs. During her four years with CaribNation Television, she interviews Caribbean authors, artists, diplomats, government ministers and business entrepreneurs. This provides her the opportunity to fulfil her quest to explore and highlight the lives and works of successful Caribbean people, and some of the issues and events affecting the lives of all Caribbean people.

Derrice Deane’s interest in broadcasting was piqued when, as a teenager, she was the youngest member of the inaugural team of the Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in Barbados. At CBC, she learned the rudiments of the broadcasting industry, working first as Assistant to the Sales Manager, then as Secretary to the General Manager and Script Writer. Simultaneously, Derrice was afforded opportunities to interview contestants for the Miss Barbados Beauty Pageant, and she produced and hosted her own 15-minute program segment. Derrice Deane

One year later, when CBC launched its television station, Derrice Deane assumed the responsibility for television traffic and sales, then worked as field and studio producer before travelling to London England to attend Pitman’s Business/Finishing College. At Pitmans she graduated in the top 10 of her class and attained a shorthand speed of 170 words per minute, typing at 85 words per minute. After a short stint in court reporting, the travel bug hit again, and Derrice spent some time travelling through Europe before moving to Montreal Canada. While working and attending college in Montreal, Derrice became involved with the Caribbean community where the ‘black power’ movement was thriving on the shoulders of the likes of Rosie Douglas, current Prime Minister of Dominica.

Derrice Deane’s broad interests brought her to the World Bank in Washington where she worked primarily on African projects over a 25 year period. Concurrently, she pursued courses in Business Management at George Washington University and then returned to communications with the Columbia School of Broadcasting where she was selected as a national finalist for the Student of the Year Award. Derrice’s interest in the Caribbean never waned, and was again challenged when the news of the Jim Jones suicide tragedy in Guyana convinced her that more positive and varied news of the Caribbean was needed in the Washington Metropolitan Area. She soon responded to the call by Von Martin, host of Caribbeanna on WPFW radio, for someone interested in assisting with Caribbean news. For the next ten years at WPFW, Derrice was the Caribbean newscaster on Caribbeanna every Saturday evening. In addition, she interviewed President Desmond Hoyte of Guyana and other Caribbean government ministers, produced and hosted feature programs addressing issues of Caribbean women, provided reports and commentaries on events such as Crop Over in Barbados, Caribbean Arts Festival in Washington, the Guyana Ecumenical Service.

During the past four years, Derrice Deane has hosted a one-hour weekly news and information talk show called Caribbean Perspective, on the Voice of America. This program is heard in the Caribbean, and is her effort at fostering Caribbean unity, cross information and intra-communication. The program is also designed to highlight the lives and works of outstanding Caribbean people and encourage discussion of issues and events affecting all Caribbean people.

Derrice has been married for 29 years to Cordell Deane, a Microbiologist and small business owner.
This union has produced 3 cherished daughters - Celandra, a financial/pension planner/consultant, De-Lea a Senior at Columbia University in New York, and Arielle, a Sophomore at Georgetown University McDonough School of Business.
